Suspect in Garden City Manhunt Still Loose, Armed and Dangerous

GARDEN CITY, GA -

A manhunt had a large part of a Garden City neighborhood blocked today.

By air and by foot, officers tracked a suspect they say is armed and dangerous. Tonight, that suspect is still on the loose.

It was a tense situation; especially for the people in the Westgate neighborhood.

It all started late Monday night when Garden City Police were getting calls about shots fired in the Westgate Apartments.

They went back to the scene today looking for a 19 year old suspect, and when they found him, they got more than they bargained for.

He took off, sparking a substantial search that lasted for hours. Officers and K-9 units were hot on his trail, and that's when police say the suspect brandished a gun, aiming right at officers. They took cover and the suspect got away.

Sergeant Benji Selph says the terrain didn't help with the search.

"Due to the dense woods, it was almost impossible to find this guy. We had a good perimeter, but before it was all over, we felt like before it was completely set, we think he might been able to sneak out the side somewhere. So at this point, he is on the loose."

Police say they believe the suspect lives in Westgate apartments or close by. They don't know his name, but they say that doesn't matter. They have a good idea as to who he is and this wasn't his first run-in with the law.

"He's local," says Sgt. Selph.

"We did have a dealing with the subject on the fourth of July, when he pointed a pistol with a laser at the same officer. So this is a reoccurring thing with him. He's got a lot of officers on edge right now."

Police describe him as a black male, 18 or 19 years old. He has a medium build and his hair in short braids. He was last seen wearing dark blue "Dickies" shorts and shirt, with a white under shirt. He is believed to be about 5'7' or 5'8".
